L-ISA immersive audio experience preserves authentic emotional depth of endangered Chinese folk traditions
BEIJING, China – October 2025 – When renowned Zhuang folk singer Tang Caimei took the stage at Beijing’s Nationality Culture Palace Theatre, audiences experienced something rare: the intimate emotional power of traditional Chinese folk music delivered through cutting-edge immersive audio experience.
Tang Caimei, who began learning Zhuang folk songs at age six and has been a solo performer with China National Ethnic Song and Dance Ensemble for over two decades, presented her solo concert “Folk Songs of Zhuang” to showcase how traditional ethnic music can evolve while preserving its cultural authenticity. The concert featured music from the Zhuang people, whose folk songs have been designated as intangible cultural heritage by the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

L-ISA Preserves Subtle Vocal Characteristics
The unique tonal qualities and high-pitch characteristics of Zhuang folk singing presented specific challenges for the audio team. L-Acoustics Certified Provider Rightway Audio Consultants (RAC) deployed L-ISA immersive sound technology specifically to capture these subtle vocal variations without losing the music’s cultural authenticity.
“When performing music with strong ethnic characteristics, the uniqueness of tone, purity of sound quality, and ambience of sound effects are all essential,” notes Yu Tao, Senior System Engineer of RAC. “L-ISA enables the emotional expression in Tang Caimei’s concert to be conveyed with greater subtlety and emotional impact.”
The concert unfolded through four distinct segments: “Songs on Homesickness,” “Songs on Love,” “Songs on Zhuang’s History,” and “Songs on Gratitude.” During ensemble pieces featuring Tang Caimei alongside guest performers Lei Ying, Chao Kejiletu, Yu Haiyang, He Mengling, and Kuang Xiaoling, the L-ISA system allowed each performer’s voice to appear to come from their physical position on stage—something impossible with conventional concert sound systems.

Precision Audio Design Enhances Cultural Presentation
RAC used Soundvision 3D modeling software during the design phase to ensure optimal sound field coverage throughout the theater. The A Series directional control delivered Tang Caimei’s high-pitch Zhuang vocal techniques naturally and clearly to every seat, preserving the authentic sound characteristics that define this traditional art form.
The L-ISA Scene System comprised five hangs, each with one A10 Focus over two A10 Wide speakers. Four KS21 subwoofers behind the central hang provided low-frequency support, while six X8 enclosures delivered spatial front-fill coverage. The system was powered by one LA7.16 and three LA4X amplified controllers, connected via four LS10 Milan-AVB switches to an L-ISA Processor II.
“The 16 output channels made LA7.16 the natural choice for this L-ISA application,” explains Yu Tao. “Redundant Milan-AVB signals meant we could integrate the entire system with a single dual-core Ethernet cable from the L-ISA Processor II—the intuitive signal matrix simplified our AVB stream configurations considerably.”

“L-ISA multi-dimensional sound breaks the limitation of space,” concludes Yu Tao. “Every note of Tang Caimei’s singing became vivid and vibrant, immersing the audience in the ethnic charms of Zhuang and allowing them to fully experience the emotion conveyed with her voice.”
The production was conducted by renowned conductor Tan Lihua with China National Opera and Dance Theatre Symphony Orchestra and Beijing Musicians Association Choir, presented by China National Ethnic Song and Dance Ensemble’s Practice Theatre for Young Artists.
