Smart Fussion uses newly acquired L2 cardioid technology to balance powerful sound with strict noise management across three 2025 events

MADRID, Spain – November 2025 – Since 2011, the nomadic, open-air festival Brunch Electronik has brought its distinctive blend of music, food, art and community to cities across Spain, Andorra, Portugal, France and Brazil. What sets this festival apart is its commitment to creating an intimate, immersive experience even in large outdoor spaces. The daytime format and urban park locations make it accessible and inclusive, while the music – a carefully curated mix of local and international DJs and live acts – brings people together. It’s this sense of community that defines Brunch Electronik.

The unique challenge to creating that intimate sonic experience in the heart of Madrid is finding a way to deliver powerful, engaging sound to thousands of festival-goers while also keeping neighbors happy. For the 2025 season, L-Acoustics Certified Provider Smart Fussion deployed L2 cardioid line arrays across three Madrid park locations, solving the noise management puzzle while maintaining the festival’s signature community feel.

“The creators of Brunch Electronik want the crowd to feel as though they are among close friends in an immersive venue, even if they are in a large crowd in an outdoor space,” says Pablo Alcazar, technical production manager at Smart Fussion. “One of the main technical challenges involves guaranteeing a robust sound pressure level inside the festival, while maintaining a very low level outside its boundaries to avoid affecting neighboring residential areas.”

Noise Management Through Cardioid Control

Smart Fussion’s answer to these constraints came in the form of L-Acoustics L2, newly acquired and the first L Series system in Spain. The cardioid line array proved ideal for managing noise in urban environments – its directional pattern delivers high SPL where it’s needed inside the festival grounds while dramatically reducing what spills into surrounding neighbourhoods.

“L2 proved ideal for the festival: a cardioid system, with compact weight and size, and modern aesthetics, that at the same time maintains the renowned L-Acoustics sonic signature,” Alcazar explains. “Rather than deploying large arrays and fighting to control where the energy goes, L2 enabled us to use smaller sources and distribute them uniformly. And the cardioid pattern gives us high SPL where we need it – inside the festival grounds – while dramatically reducing what spills into the surrounding neighbourhoods.”

Under the technical direction of “La Productiva Eventos”, Smart Fussion handled audio for three Brunch Electronik editions across Madrid’s Juan Carlos I, Lineal del Manzanares and Tierno Galvan urban parks throughout Spring and Summer 2025, with audiences ranging from 5,000 to nearly 20,000 people. Each venue presented distinct acoustic challenges. Juan Carlos I Park’s long, narrow footprint – approximately 40 meters wide by 125 meters deep – required strategic delay tower placement to maintain consistent SPL and coverage. Lineal del Manzanares Park demanded broader horizontal coverage and more distributed source points to ensure even sound across its wider lateral spread.

Flexible Deployment Across Changing Venues

L2’s lighter weight also ensured faster load-ins and more flexibility in rigging deployments. Smart Fussion didn’t have to wait for final venue decisions before flying the gear. Instead, the team could set the Panflex opening and get the arrays in the air, with tilt, height and Autofilter adjustments taking place once everything was assembled. This agility proved essential when adapting quickly to different park configurations during the course of the season.

When L2 launched, it was a game-changer for the festival. The difference was immediately apparent, not just to the technical team, but to the festival organisers too. “The first time we set up L2, the event organisers made it clear that this was what they wanted for future events,” Alcazar recalls.

Scalable Design Across Three Spaces

Achieving consistent coverage across varying outdoor venues required meticulous design work in Soundvision. The software’s Autofilter processes became an essential part of Smart Fussion’s workflow, particularly for L2 deployments where precise 3D modeling directly influenced the system’s cardioid performance. Smart Fussion modeled each park to optimise speaker placement and predict coverage patterns before arriving on site.

Across the three 2025 Madrid editions, Smart Fussion deployed a flexible system architecture that scaled to every site’s requirements. The L2 and L2D formed the core of the main PA, with KS28 subwoofers extended low-frequency coverage while maintaining the same cardioid approach, critical for keeping bass energy contained within the festival grounds.

K3 handled the front-fill, covering near-field areas where the main arrays couldn’t reach without compromising throw to the back of the venue. For DJ monitoring, the team combined A15 Focus and A15 Wide enclosures with KS21 subwoofers, giving artists the SPL and low-end response they needed without adding to overall stage wash. X15 filled specific coverage gaps where necessary, especially in irregularly shaped venue sections.

Processing ran through P1 units at front of house, with all audio transmitted via redundant Milan-AVB network over fibre optics. LS10 network switches in each LA-RAK II and LA-RAK III rack enabled Smart Fussion to simultaneously monitor and control the amplifier network while running redundant Milan-AVB over the same fiber cables—ensuring both consistent audio feed and automatic failover protection without additional cabling. LA7.16 amplified controllers powered the main PA and delays, while LA12x amplified controllers handled fills, subs and monitors. The result was a scalable system that adapted easily to Brunch Electronik’s varying audience capacity and park configurations.

‘Exceeded Our Expectations’

The impact was both measurable and immediate. Smart Fussion’s crew of L-Acoustics certified technicians – many trained at Smart Fussion’s own facility – executed the deployments across the season with support from L-Acoustics and Spanish distributor EarPro.

Ultimately, the system delivered the powerful, intimate sound Brunch Electronik required while respecting the urban environment that makes the festival accessible in the first place. “We achieved everything we set out to achieve, and the results at all three festivals exceeded our expectations,” concludes Alcazar.
