The Artisans of Sound: Stéphane Plisson The Artisans of Sound: Stéphane Plisson...
In the world of live sound, few figures have shaped the craft with as much intention and curiosity as Stéphane Plisson. His career reads like an evolving study of how technology, instinct, and artistry converge to create experiences that linger long after the houselights rise. Across decades on the road and collaborations with major French artists, Stéphane has carved out a place as one of the country’s most imaginative FOH engineers.
A Career Built on Curiosity and Craft
From early tours with Mylène Farmer and Johnny Hallyday to arena and stadium productions for Julien Clerc, Calogero, Julio Iglesias, and Kids United, Stéphane has become a benchmark for what precision and emotional clarity can achieve in large-scale sound reinforcement. French venues know his signature deeply, even when audiences may be unaware he is the man behind the sound. His mixes retain their musicality under pressure and carry an emotional weight that feels intentional from the first note to the final chord.
One defining moment from 2008 captures his approach. Perched eight feet above the Paris Bercy floor with a Midas XL4 under his hands, he navigated a hybrid system that blended the warmth of analog with the flexibility of emerging digital workflows. At a time when the industry was sharply divided between analog purists and digital adopters, Stéphane embraced a layered methodology. He used analog gear for its tactile musicality and digital platforms for their precision, automation, and broader creative control. The result was a sound that felt shaped by hand, crafted with the ear of someone who understood both the technical and emotional demands of live sound.

A Longstanding Relationship with L-Acoustics
Stéphane’s evolution as an engineer runs parallel to the development of modern touring systems, and his long relationship with L-Acoustics has become a defining part of his work. From early deployments of V-DOSC and dV-DOSC with SB28 subs to large-scale arena and stadium productions, he has consistently turned to L-Acoustics systems as the backbone of his FOH designs.
That relationship is not only professional but personal, rooted in decades of shared history across the French touring landscape. As Stéphane himself reflects:
“My history with L-Acoustics is simple. I started in the business in 1987 alongside Madjid Malki and POTAR Hurlant. So, I was among the first technicians to set up, calibrate, and mix on L-Acoustics systems. From the incremental/docs/VDOSC systems, and on. I’ve used them all! Even the monitors! I realize that now. It’s incredible. I’ve always loved what these systems allowed me to achieve. They allow me to hear what I’m trying to do in my mixes. It’s the only system that lets me hear what’s deep inside my brain! Their musicality is unparalleled.”
His collaboration with the brand has been acknowledged publicly, reinforcing the role their loudspeaker platforms have played in helping him achieve clarity, impact, and consistency for tens of thousands of listeners at a time.
Philosophy in Motion
What sets Stéphane apart is a mixing philosophy grounded in emotional logic. He approaches his work with meticulous care while letting instinct guide transitions, dynamics, and tonal choices. Digital consoles, analog textures, and high-performance loudspeaker systems form a palette he uses to bring an artist’s narrative to life. For Stéphane, technology remains a means of elevating presence and pleasure rather than a framework that restricts creativity.
Looking Ahead
Today, Stéphane Plisson continues to bring his expertise to major touring productions and large-format live events, applying decades of experience to shows that demand both precision and artistic sensitivity. He remains a sought-after FOH engineer for leading French and European performers, contributing to tours and concert series that rely on his ability to shape sound with intention and authority. Whether he is refining system designs, building hybrid workflows, or mixing at front of house for shows that fill arenas and stadiums, Stéphane continues to advance the craft of live sound through a deep respect for music, technology, and the audience’s experience.
