Full-Bandwidth Coverage, Zero Delays: Outfitting OM with L-Acoustics K3

Situated on the banks of the Meuse just outside Liège, Belgium, OM stands as Wallonia’s largest and most versatile live music venue. The building dates back to 1948, originally serving as a banquet hall for workers at the Cockerill steel complex. Following decades of abandonment, the team behind the Les Ardentes festival revitalized the space, opening its doors in October 2023. Today, OM hosts an eclectic lineup spanning metal, jazz, techno, and hip-hop.

The Challenge

The 1950s industrial architecture created a challenging acoustic environment for modern performances. The venue needed a sound system capable of delivering festival-level sound pressure levels and full-bandwidth coverage for diverse musical genres. However, the medium-sized space dictated strict visual and physical constraints; management refused to accept large, visually imposing arrays or obstructive subwoofer sprawl on the floor.

The Solution

L-Acoustics Certified Provider XLR specified a K3-based system to meet the venue’s rigorous demands without dominating the room visually. Using Soundvision to model the challenging acoustics and optimize placement, the integrator hung eight K3 per side as the main system. Because K3 operates from 40 Hz to 20 kHz, it minimized the need for excessive low-frequency reinforcement.

To augment the low end while keeping the stage entirely clear for touring productions, XLR deployed four KS28 subwoofers per side, flown directly alongside the main arrays. This flown configuration also supports the precise stereo bass imaging required by electronic music acts. For consistent coverage, two X12 address the near-field in-fill areas, while four A10 Wide serve as front-fills to maintain intelligibility for the front rows. Six LA12X amplified controllers drive the entire system. By relying on the precise directivity of the K3 enclosures, XLR successfully covered the entire audience area without requiring a single delay speaker.

The Result

The new installation provides international touring crews with a highly respected, rider-friendly system, eliminating the friction often associated with unfamiliar house rigs. Audiences now flock to the venue specifically for the exceptional audio quality. The system delivers consistent power, precise coverage, and festival-grade impact while respecting the vintage architecture of the historic steelworkers’ hall.

Project Photos

People come here because of the sound. We wanted to bring the feeling of a big festival into a mid-size venue, and that’s exactly what we’ve done. K3 made it possible.
