STOCKHOLM, Sweden – October 2025<\/strong>\u00a0— For\u00a0nearly\u00a0140\u00a0years,\u00a0Nalen\u00a0has been hosting the performances that shaped Swedish culture – from the\u00a0legendary\u00a0artists who graced its stage in the 1950s\u00a0and 60s, to the diverse roster\u00a0of\u00a0contemporary\u00a0acts that keep its calendar packed\u00a0with\u00a0over 100\u00a0concerts\u00a0and events\u00a0annually. But\u00a0a\u00a0historic\u00a0venue\u00a0comes\u00a0with\u00a0historic\u00a0challenges. The 19th-century\u00a0concert\u00a0hall’s\u00a0architectural constraints – strict weight\u00a0limits, sightline restrictions,\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0protected building status -meant that the\u00a0aging sound system needed\u00a0replacing\u00a0with\u00a0something both powerful\u00a0and ingenious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working with consultant Fredrik Martinsson of Comet Audio, Nalen assessed these challenges and identified the requirements for a premium solution. Several integrators were asked to propose systems. JLE Audio AB, an L-Acoustics Certified Provider with over 20 years of experience with the brand, was selected based on the strength of their proposal and the confidence Nalen and Comet placed in their expertise. JLE recommended the L-Acoustics L Series, a system engineered to overcome what conventional installations couldn’t: delivering premium audio coverage while respecting the very constraints that make Nalen architecturally irreplaceable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The venue is no stranger to L-Acoustics. For years, L-Acoustics systems have served Nalen’s performance spaces with distinction. But technology evolves, and the system in the main concert hall – well over a decade old – had reached the point where an upgrade made sense. Nalen needed something that could handle the demands of modern touring artists, control the problematic reflections bouncing off the side walls, and do it all within a 200kg ceiling weight limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Iconic Venue with a Number of Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nalen\u2019s acoustic overhaul presented a unique set of challenges. The first obstacle involved the aforementioned side wall reflections that were reducing acoustic clarity and causing uneven coverage throughout the space. This challenge was compounded by a strict ceiling weight limit of just over 200kg, and there were sightline and height restrictions to consider, too. Perhaps most importantly of all, the venue is classified as a historical building, which means that many of the architectural modifications that would ordinarily be used to address these issues weren\u2019t viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe needed a premium solution that could deliver maximum output with minimum footprint,\u201d explains Johannes Jonsson, CEO and Sound Engineer at L-Acoustics Certified Provider JLE Audio AB, who led the installation. \u201cThe system had to be sustainable, long-lasting, and capable of meeting the complex needs of a wide range of artists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Demonstration to Reality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original project timeline was affected by the pandemic, but this delay ultimately proved favourable. When the project was initially conceived, L-Acoustics had not yet launched the L Series. By the time work resumed two years ago, however, the L Series was available -and turned out to be the ideal solution. \u201cNalen was specifically interested in the L Series from the outset,\u201d notes Jonsson. \u201cThey\u2019re tech enthusiasts and were aware that it would tick all of their boxes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JLE used Soundvision to assess the viability of L2D, carefully mapping every possible option to find the perfect placement. With a proposed Soundvision design approved, the team went on to arrange a demonstration. Because JLE also rents L-Acoustics equipment, it was able to temporarily install the exact proposed configuration in Nalen\u2019s main hall in January 2025. The results were immediately convincing\u2014and, with that, the project was under way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The installation itself was executed with precision timing. Nalen closes for one month each summer, but with other building renovations taking place simultaneously, scheduling was critical. After the final show in late June, the team removed the old system and began installing new cabling, the most time-consuming phase of the project. The JLE team arrived in early August and completed the physical installation in just three days, taking advantage of existing hoist infrastructure and hanging points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Precision Engineering and Acoustic Innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final deployment comprises one\u00a0L2D<\/a> per side, four KS21<\/a> subs in cardioid,\u00a0and\u00a0an\u00a0additional two\u00a0A10 Wide for impact in the front. It was meticulously designed to\u00a0address every challenge\u00a0and to be reconfigured\u00a0with\u00a0ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highly controlled cardioid dispersion of the L2D focuses sound energy on the audience, ensuring full coverage while dramatically reducing energy directed at the side walls. With the total L2D weight amounting to 190kg in total, well within the ceiling\u2019s weight limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The subwoofer solution is just\u00a0as elegant. Four KS21 subwoofers in cardioid configuration minimise\u00a0low-frequency energy bouncing\u00a0off the rear\u00a0and side surfaces,\u00a0and provide powerful bass response. Finally, the two\u00a0A10 Wide<\/a>\u00a0offer enhanced front-of-stage impact during rock\u00a0concerts,\u00a0and because they can be pole-mounted over the KS21 subwoofers, they\u2019re easy to\u00a0adjust for different types\u00a0of\u00a0events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These event configurations may include, for example, a cube configuration for concerts, with all elements deployed for optimal coverage. For conferences or dinner events where a cleaner stage appearance is preferred, an end-fire subwoofer configuration is available. And a third, rarely used configuration allows the foldable stage to be reduced in size for speaking events, with front-fills repositioned and two subs removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new system is\u00a0Nalen’s first Milan-AVB installation,\u00a0and is indicative\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0significant step forward in the\u00a0venue\u2019s\u00a0audio\u00a0networking technology. The complete system runs through\u00a0a\u00a0P1<\/a> processor\u00a0and three\u00a0LA7.16i<\/a>\u00a0amplified controllers,\u00a0a\u00a0compact configuration that delivers exceptional power\u00a0and control.\u00a0All\u00a0audio\u00a0distribution uses\u00a0AVB protocol via\u00a0an\u00a0LS10<\/a>, providing reliable,\u00a0low-latency digital\u00a0audio\u00a0transmission\u00a0with\u00a0built-in redundancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNalen\u00a0is the second\u00a0L2<\/a> installation we\u2019ve completed,\u201d says Jonsson. \u201cThe first was in 2024\u00a0at J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping\u00a0Concert\u00a0Hall. There is huge interest in this system throughout Sweden\u00a0and we\u2019re pleased to be meeting this demand.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Truly Delighted\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system\u2019s first post-calibration performance featured the artist SYML, with Jonsson remaining on-site to support the debut show. The subsequent response from artists, engineers and venue staff has been overwhelmingly positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEverybody is incredibly excited about this installation,\u201d says Eijerstam. \u201cFor many of our crew and visiting artists, it\u2019s the first time they\u2019re working on an L Series. It\u2019s a fantastic new system and they\u2019re thrilled to experience it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back on the project, both Nalen and JLE express complete satisfaction with the results. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing we would have done differently\u2014we\u2019re truly delighted,\u201d concludes Eijerstam. \u201cI\u2019ve known Johannes for years and I\u2019m extremely pleased with his team\u2019s work. It\u2019s been flawless. After the extensive testing we did with the actual system in the venue before installation, we were confident it would meet our expectations. And it has delivered completely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
