With PRG recently rejoining the singer\/rapper as his touring sound reinforcement provider, one thing that remained unchanged on the Twelve Carat Tour was the artist\u2019s reliance on L-Acoustics K Series loudspeakers, which had also been deployed on his last major run, 2019\/20\u2019s Runaway Tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Manning the FOH mix each night was Burton Ishmael, known for his previous work with Lil Baby, Nas, Big Sean, Miguel, H.E.R, and others. Supporting him at FOH was systems engineer Ben Bruns, who toured with both Jack Johnson and Harry Styles between the Twelve Carat and Runaway Tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Bruns, the sound system approach for Malone\u2019s latest tour was somewhat unconventional, which was a direct answer to the unique layout of the stage. \u201cThe stage featured three parallel thrusts\u2014I called it \u2018the trident\u2019\u2014which really made the show about Post,\u201d he describes. \u201cHe had access to the entire arena floor, which fans absolutely loved. This design required re-thinking the classic approach of two large hangs of PA flanking a normal stage, but with a distributed system approach of eight hangs of L-Acoustics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/k2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">K2<\/a> arrays, I could be more precise with my Soundvision predictions, which allowed a more consistent SPL around the entire arena.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With three arrays per side lining the left and right thrusts and two more arrays firing out at the end, much like a typical left\/right mains setup, the PA was comprised of eight identical hangs of 16 K2 enclosures. Eight more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/ks28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KS28<\/a> complemented four cardioid-configured hangs of eight KS28 subs on the arena floor. Additionally, four hangs of six <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/kara-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kara<\/a> were horizontally flown as audience pit-fills, bringing the grand total of L-Acoustics loudspeakers up to 192, which were powered by 96 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/la12x\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LA12X<\/a> amplified controllers and driven by two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/p1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">P1<\/a> Milan AVB FOH processors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"26401\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_1-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26401\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_1-300x300.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_1-150x150.jpg 150w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_1-768x768.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_1-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_1-2048x2048.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">PRG carried a large L-Acoustics K2 PA system out on Post Malone\u2019s recent Twelve Carat Tour of North American arenas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" data-id=\"26400\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26400\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_2-300x225.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_2-768x576.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_2-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/LA_Post22_2.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Systems engineer Ben Bruns (left) and FOH engineer Burton Ishmael<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the help of my good friend Dave Brooks at L-Acoustics, along with Posty Touring\u2019s Production Manager Dennis Danneels and PRG&#8217;s Burton Tenenbein, the PA design that we came up with very effectively kept the energy at least 15 dB down on the runways minimizing bleed into Post\u2019s microphone,\u201d says Ishmael. \u201cI also high-passed his mic at 125 Hz to address the low end, but there really wasn\u2019t anything to worry about beyond that, and the system\u2019s coverage of the audience was dead-on as Soundvision predicted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ishmael shares that low end is always a huge component of his mix equation. \u201cFor me, it sets the foundation for the balance of the mids and highs,\u201d he says. \u201cPost\u2019s music contains quite a variety of different low-end \u2018flavors\u2019 and is tremendously dynamic, so subs have to keep up with the punch needed. Thankfully, KS28 goes low, moves fast, and can take a serious beating. Those who know me and the way I mix will tell you that I have two volume levels: soft and full-power loud. I push the system, mixing not only for the sonic details but for <em>feeling<\/em> and to get an audience involved. I want to give them the experience of life-like sound. To accomplish this, I need power, dynamic woofers, and zero musical distortion. L-Acoustics delivers all of that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a system tuning perspective, Bruns notes that Soundvision\u2019s Autosolver tools, especially Autofilter, were great for helping him \u201cget the rig quickly to where it needed to be sonically each night,\u201d he says. \u201cBurton has a very discerning ear, so hitting his target curve without a bunch of filters was crucial, and the FIR filters really let me dial in and make every seat the best seat in the house. Also, Autoclimate\u2019s temperature and humidity compensation was a lifesaver for keeping the show under control. We time and tune the rig when it\u2019s a cold, empty arena, so with 20,000 people screaming and a ton of pyro, those conditions change quickly. P1 allowed these adjustments to be made reliably and consistently on the fly, and the processor made it very easy to route for ADA feeds, records, walk-in music, and so on. With P1, we drove the system Milan AVB and had perfect and consistent network reliability\u2014the rig never once went into fallback.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bruns points to Ishmael as the one who ultimately decided to specify K2 for the fall tour, citing \u201ccoverage and consistency across the entire audience plane being the most important factor in that choice. Plus, the support we got from L-Acoustics through the entire tour, from prep to the final show, was incredible,\u201d Bruns adds. \u201cAs they say, the best sound comes from one source.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the holiday season downtime, Post Malone\u2019s touring itinerary picks back up in January and February for a New Zealand and Australia run before reportedly heading off to other parts of the world.
