In that time, the multi-site megachurch has grown to two dozen campus locations, mostly in central Alabama and centered around Birmingham. In the process, it has become the second-largest church in the United States, with an average of over 43,000 attendees each week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, its newest location, a 1,000-seat church on the former site of Gibson Elementary School in Birmingham\u2019s Woodlawn neighborhood, reflects one of the ways that Church of the Highlands has expanded so quickly and seamlessly: the church\u2019s AVL crew is a technologically savvy group of folks. Opened in September, Church of the Highland\u2019s team installed a new L-Acoustics A10 sound system themselves using a design from the L-Acoustics Soundvision software. Backstage Productions LLC, the local AV systems integrator who sold the system, and BJ Shaver, L-Acoustics Director of Sales, Americas, provided valued help and input for the design of the new system install.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"25685\" data-full-url=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_1.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/?attachment_id=25685\" class=\"wp-image-25685\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_1-300x200.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_1-768x512.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_1.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-item__caption\">Church of the Highlands\u2019 newest location in Birmingham\u2019s Woodlawn neighborhood benefits from a discreet yet powerful L-Acoustics A10 sound system<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a nice collaborative effort by all of us to get this new location the right sound system for its needs,\u201d says Backstage Productions LLC President Brad Brooks, who notes this was the company\u2019s own first installation of an A10 system in a church, and who adds that the A10 has become a go-to solution for side- and front-fills in larger system designs. \u201cWe did a demo for them in the space that showed the A10 could handle music at volume without any problem. We\u2019re a concert company and can create that kind of performance environment for them. The A10 can deliver a real concert-type experience but is compact enough not to be a factor for sightlines or be a visual distraction. The A10 packs a lot of punch for its size and offers a stellar price-performance ratio.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new Woodlawn system comprises a dozen A10, including eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/a10-focus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A10 Focus<\/a> enclosures plus four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/a10-wide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A10 Wide<\/a> configured in two main hangs of three A10 Focus per side topped with one A10 Wide. A further two out-fill hangs have an A10 Focus on top and a Wide on the bottom. There are also seven flown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/ks21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KS21<\/a> subs and six short-throw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/x8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">X8<\/a> coaxials providing front-fill. The system is powered by six <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/la4x\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LA4X<\/a> amplified controllers, with an L-Acoustics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/p1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">P1<\/a> doing the processing. The PA send is from a Yamaha CL5 at FOH through two Q-SYS 510i Cores via Dante, which distributes the PA send to the LA4X amps via AVB through two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/products\/ls10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LS10<\/a> network switches, establishing two redundant networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith the continual launching of new campuses, we\u2019ve gained a lot of confidence in our abilities as a team to take the installation process in-house,\u201d says Jay Wood, Church of the Highlands\u2019 Audio Systems Engineer. \u201cWhat really contributed to that, in this case, was the simplicity and compactness of the A10 and the power of the Soundvision software. Sometimes with prediction software, you can get pretty close to what the reality will be, but with Soundvision, the distance between prediction and real life was virtually none at all. I was thrilled with how this installation came together because of A Series and Soundvision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"25687\" data-full-url=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_2.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.l-acoustics.com\/?attachment_id=25687\" class=\"wp-image-25687\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_2-300x200.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_2-768x512.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_2-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/LA_Highlands_2.jpg 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-item__caption\">Backstage Productions LLC helped design and supply the new loudspeaker setup, which was installed by the church\u2019s AVL tech team<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Wood can get very specific about what he feels is required in a system, and A10 gave him the specificity he wanted. For instance, he says, the Focus option allowed for the throw he needed on the top of the main hangs while the Wide model on the bottom of each feathered the sound out evenly for the front rows. \u201cThe A10 has a great physical footprint, so deployment is very simple as far as rigging goes,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd the X8 are so good for front-fills. I really wanted a throaty eight-inch driver because a smaller driver never really blends in with the rest of the arrays properly, and that disconnects people in the front rows, who are looking up at the stage, from the rest of the sound. With our new system, everything sounds very consistent throughout the entire room.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But more importantly, he emphasizes, it\u2019s the overall experience that the A10 and the rest of the L-Acoustics products create that made the difference. \u201cWe\u2019re not looking to achieve loud for loud\u2019s sake; we\u2019re looking for great sound and accurate reproduction at any level,\u201d he says. \u201cPeople often buy gear because they like a particular bell or whistle, but the reality is that I\u2019m buying tools to facilitate a distraction-free worship experience for people. There&#8217;s no such thing as the specificity of \u2018church sound.\u2019 Good sound is good sound.
