BNP deploys massive K Series rigs for DWP\u2019s Inkcarceration, Louder Than Life, Aftershock, and Welcome To Rockville multi-day music festivals<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

DENVER, Colorado \u2013 December 2021 \u2013<\/strong> Although everyone from The Doors to Lenny Kravitz has famously claimed in their songs that \u201crock is dead,\u201d you\u2019d have a hard time convincing the sold-out crowds that attended any of the recent Danny Wimmer Presents (DWP) music festivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From September through November, DWP staged four major multi-day productions: Mansfield, Ohio\u2019s Inkcarceration\u2014held outside The Shawshank Redemption<\/em>\u2019s Ohio State Reformatory\u2014 Louder Than Life at Louisville\u2019s Highland Festival Grounds, Aftershock in Sacramento\u2019s Discovery Park, and Daytona International Speedway\u2019s Welcome To Rockville, all of which were sonically reinforced via Denver-based Brown Note Productions\u2019 (BNP) massive L-Acoustics K Series loudspeaker systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to BNP President Ryan Knutson, three of the four festivals featured a dual-mainstage setup, with similar systems deployed across each stage. Main arrays were comprised of six K1-SB<\/a> atop a dozen K1<\/a> over six K2<\/a> downs per side, with eight KS28<\/a> subs flown in a cardioid configuration behind each main. A total of 33 additional KS28 were spread out in groups of three across the face of each stage for additional low-frequency punch, with 12 Kara<\/a> positioned on top for front-fill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out-fill was achieved via eight K2 flown over three Kara per side, while four delay towers\u2014two per stage out in the audience\u2014each featured 15 K2 combined with three KS28. Power and processing for the twin-stage systems were delivered by 126 LA12X<\/a> and 12 LA8<\/a> amplified controllers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough we\u2019ve had Brown Note bring in L-Acoustics for festivals like Louder Than Life in the past, we really upped the ante for 2021,\u201d shares DWP Director of Event Production Les Targonski. \u201cBoth main stages this year had full K1 rigs that ran simultaneously. We created a very wide wall of sound, with each stage having its own stereo pair of delays. Since we were hosting two nights of Metallica for three of our festivals, I felt the need to give more thought to the delay plan. My original idea was to build two layers of delay towers, with two towers per layer\u2014one pair at 250 feet from the main source and the second at 400. But after working closely with Ryan and the rest of the Brown Note team, L-Acoustics Soundvision<\/a> software showed us that we would be more effective having a single layer of towers with a longer box count that provided full and even coverage all the way to the back, which was beyond 600 feet. Since Aftershock and Welcome to Rockville also boasted two separate main stages, this became the audio model that we used for the rest of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Targonski points out that one of the biggest challenges on huge festivals like these is achieving proper coverage. \u201cThis is not to be confused with volume,\u201d he says. \u201cLoud<\/em> does not necessarily sound good<\/em>, but proper speaker coverage does. The reality is that not all mix engineers are built the same, and we can\u2019t control how they mix. Some folks get intimidated by the capabilities of a large application PA, or they tend to mix for their ear, not for the patrons. This is why we emphasize the importance of coverage of the full frequency spectrum. We want every patron to feel<\/em> the experience. It also helps to have a systems engineer that will walk the venue and make adjustments to components that the front-of-house engineers might not pay attention to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe combination of the Brown Note team with their L-Acoustics products has afforded me the ability to build a trusting relationship with way too many production teams to name. One thing that really resonates with me is that when an artist\u2019s production manager emails or calls to do the \u2018advance dance,\u2019 they rarely take the time to look under the hood to see what engine we have. Reputation is everything in this industry. If you\u2019re doing it right, people will notice, and they have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knutson agrees that having the right team and tools makes all the difference. \u201cThe overall clarity, impact, and flexibility of K Series give us a chance to offer guest engineers a great starting point,\u201d he says. \u201cOur job is just that\u2014to give everyone a quality platform to start from in these stressful festival situations where you have no time, and before you know it, you\u2019re already loading out. L-Acoustics, with its signature sound and processing tools, makes it a real joy for our teams to deploy these systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For DWP festival concertgoers enjoying the comforts of the VIP sections, these areas were covered by two intimate L-Acoustics systems this fall: an A Series rig comprised of two A15 Wide<\/a> and two A15 Focus<\/a> enclosures paired with four KS21<\/a> subs and powered by two LA4X<\/a> and a Syva system made up of two Syva<\/a>, two Syva Low<\/a>, and two Syva Subs<\/a>, also powered by an LA4X duo. \u201cOne of the hurdles at Welcome To Rockville, in particular, was that the VIP space sat off-axis of the main arrays,\u201d Targonski notes. \u201cWe were able to achieve success by supplying the VIP section with its own stereo pair with subs to boot. No complaints there, right?\u201d he says with a grin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI respect the fact that the L-Acoustics team periodically peeks their heads behind the curtain to see what we are doing over here,\u201d he adds. \u201cLet\u2019s be honest, rock music doesn\u2019t get a great deal of attention these days, and when we get the opportunity to show off our shiny toys, it feels really good. There are some very talented individuals that live in this genre, and L-Acoustics has long provided the tools for them to hone their craft. And for that, I say, \u2018thank you!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
