ESI Production Services installs a Kara system in the historic venue\u2019s main auditorium, enabling it to host a wide variety of music genres and other live events<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida \u2013 December 2020<\/strong> \u2013 If you live in St. Petersburg, Florida, then you know the Floridian. The 8,600-square-foot building began life in the 1920s as a bank, then was transformed into a cinema, and later a concert hall known as the State Theater before being shuttered in 2018. Designed in the neo-classical architecture style\u2014arched doorways, Greek columns, ornate carvings\u2014the venue has stood the test of time. Now, purchased by St. Pete native and entrepreneur Kevin Chadwick, who oversaw an estimated $1 million-plus renovation that he described as \u2018a passion project,\u2019 it\u2019s become the Floridian Social Club<\/a>, a lounge, concert venue, and event space in the heart of the city\u2019s downtown Central Avenue entertainment district.

What will certainly help future-proof the Floridian is an L-Acoustics Kara PA system, installed by local integrator ESI Production Services<\/a>. The new loudspeaker setup comprises two hangs of nine Kara<\/a> boxes per side and a single flown ARCS Focus<\/a>s centerfill speaker, collectively powered by three LA8<\/a> amplified controllers, and three LA12X<\/a>-driven KS28<\/a> subs installed under the stage of the venue\u2019s 800-seat main theater. Two more LA12X are used to power eight X12<\/a> wedge monitors, with one SB18<\/a> sub integrated into the system and dedicated to drum kits.

All that stands between the venue\u2019s history as the State Theater<\/a> and its new incarnation as the Floridian Social Club is the abatement of the COVID pandemic. \u201cWhen the time comes, which Kevin expects will be in January and properly socially distanced, the Kara will be ready and waiting,\u201d says ESI Production Services President Erick “Otto” Celeiro.

Celeiro also specified the system, installed by colleague Conrad \u201cDeke\u201d Andrews and calibrated by L-Acoustics Application Engineer Vic Wagner. \u201cKara is the perfect solution for this project,\u201d Celeiro notes, citing the enclosure\u2019s light weight and compact form factor. \u201cIt sounds fantastic, and it will be able to handle any type of music they can bring in. But, equally important for a landmark building like this, aesthetic concerns were critical. An enormous amount of money was invested to make the venue look great. The PA had to be able to deliver a real punch without being visibly obvious. Kara does just that\u2014delivering unexpected punch for its size.\u201d

He adds that Kara\u2019s light weight also addresses any issues around rigging in a 100-year-old building. \u201cI consulted an authority on rigging in older buildings and he confirmed that the ceiling could easily withstand nine Kara per side thanks to how light the box is,\u201d Celeiro says. \u201cBut above any other factor, Kara was chosen for how it sounds. It\u2019s able to provide excellent fidelity and coverage for the entire room and was ultimately chosen for its performance.\u201d

Chadwick, who says he feels fortunate that the Floridian\u2019s renovation period coincided with the pandemic\u2019s shutdown, agrees that sound quality was the overriding consideration in choosing the L-Acoustics system. \u201cThe concerts and events that will take place here will range from A to Z\u2014from country to rap\u2014so the sound system has to be able to handle any kind of genre,\u201d he says. \u201cWe know Kara can do that because it\u2019s the first choice of so many great musicians. We understand that a venue\u2019s sound system plays a role in attracting artists, and we\u2019re glad that ESI recommended it. In fact, L-Acoustics\u2019 reputation as a leading, \u2018rider-friendly\u2019 sound system was a prime consideration in our decision.

\u201cEveryone is looking forward to when we can all hear live music again,\u201d he continues. \u201cAnd we feel that we\u2019ve created an environment for performers and audiences here that no other venue of our size, in this market, can offer. And Kara has a lot to do with that.\u201d
