ClearSound Design installs an A Series system at Cincinnati\u2019s new Fifth Third Center Stage<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

CINCINNATI, Ohio – March 2021<\/strong> \u2013 Cincinnati\u2019s Fountain Square<\/a> has a rich heritage as the epicenter of the \u201cQueen City\u2019s\u201d civic, commercial, and social lives. Surrounded by restaurants, bars, shopping and hotels, the downtown entertainment hub now has yet another reason for people to gather and celebrate\u2014a new $2M performance stage funded by Fifth Third Bank<\/a>, whose corporate headquarters flank the square\u2019s east side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifth Third Center Stage, designed in partnership with Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation<\/a> (3CDC) and the City of Cincinnati<\/a>, fulfills a long-term community objective to have a permanent state-of-the-art performance venue in the two-acre urban \u201cliving room\u201d surrounding the 150-year-old Tyler Davidson Fountain. To ensure the best possible event experience for patrons, 3CDC called on local integrator ClearSound Design<\/a> to design and install the site\u2019s staging, lighting, video interconnect and audio facilities, including a new L-Acoustics A Series<\/a> system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ClearSound Design Project Manager and Systems Integrator Brock Fowler notes one of the project’s primary challenges was to mitigate noise spill into other parts of the city, especially Fountain Square’s surrounding businesses. \u201cWith L-Acoustics Soundvision <\/a>software, we were able to visually show the client during the design process where the sound would be louder in specific areas with different elements and configurations and, just as importantly, where the sound wouldn\u2019t be,\u201d he says. \u201cWe ultimately recommended an A15 system, which provided the right SPL and fidelity, as well as allowed us to focus the sound only on the intended areas via the array placements, adjustable HF horn controls, and built-in vertical increments on the rigging.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3CDC Senior Events Production Manager Andi Schultes agrees that Soundvision was key to instilling confidence in the L-Acoustics solution from the start. \u201cBeing able to map the sound coverage and how it would interact with neighboring buildings, and even how it would travel down the streets, was hugely helpful in choosing the right system and dialing in the placement of the speakers,\u201d she says. \u201cBy the time the loudspeakers arrived onsite, we knew where we wanted the prime spots to be and where we needed to cancel out the noise pollution, which made commissioning very straightforward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new loudspeaker system for the Third Center Stage comprises left and right arrays of three L-Acoustics A15 Focus<\/a> enclosures over one A15 Wide<\/a>, with eight KS21<\/a> subs horizontally spread out on the ground across the face of the stage. Four LA4X<\/a> amplified controllers housed in a room below the stage drive the mains and sub elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although cold Midwestern temperatures and COVID protocols have each kept the venue\u2019s early number of performances down, the L-Acoustics system has already been used for several smaller events, local band performances, talk\/game shows, and playback for the ice rink that occupies Fountain Square over the winter months. \u201cThe A15 system definitely gave the rink experience an added boost, compared to the single-horn announce system we\u2019ve had in years past,\u201d says Schultes. \u201cEven without the subs in use, the word \u2018bouncy\u2019 was mentioned more than once when the right tune came on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schultes points out that she was familiar with the L-Acoustics brand prior to this project, but not the A Series, specifically. \u201cRental houses have brought in different L-Acoustics systems for various third-party events at Fountain Square, but being able to have the A15 arrays flown and dialed in specifically for our needs has been amazing\u2014what a difference! The warmth and clarity of this system are phenomenal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although 3CDC is still working out the details of its spring and early summer season for the stage, the plan is to start hosting local band performances weekly as warmer weather arrives. \u201cI\u2019m really excited for everyone to hear this new system. The biggest improvement for both patrons and performers is the clarity and control we now have. No more onstage spill for the band, and no more loss of clarity when you\u2019re too close or too far for the audience\u2014just clean, crisp, warm coverage everywhere it needs to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
